God Uses ‘The Chosen’ to Fulfill This Girl’s Heartfelt Dream

Kaelyn Reese’s parents, Steve and Becky, didn’t realize at first that their daughter, later diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, was on the autism spectrum. And when they gave to help support Dallas Jenkins’ crowd-funded streaming series The Chosen’s first four episodes, they didn’t realize the amazing impact the show would have on Kaelyn’s life.

But then they noticed the behavior of Matthew, played by Paris Patel. “The way he interacted with people was very mechanical, always lookin around. I kind of recognized that—at least I had suspicions that he might be on the spectrum,” Steve says.

That suspicion helped plant a dream in Kaelyn’s heart—one of playing the cello for The Chosen as well as telling its creators how much their choice to cast Matthew as a person living with autism meant to her. Series creator Dallas Jenkins has strong, personal connections to those on the autism spectrum, and he was delighted to receive Kaelyn’s letter.
