Reports Say Kasich Is Out
The pathway to the likely Republican presidential nomination was cleared even more for Donald Trump on Wednesday morning.
NBC News and Politico reported Ohio Gov. John Kasich was planning to drop out of the presidential race. A few moments later, his campaign announced a 5 p.m. EDT press conference in Columbus, Ohio.
No other details were provided, and the campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
With all of the remaining campaigns suspended, Trump’s nomination would be all but assured, based on current Republican Party rules. The GOP has made it clear it does not intend to change the rules ahead of the national convention in Cleveland in July.
The Republican National Committee’s website declared Trump the “presumptive nominee” on Tuesday night. But over the next several weeks, the businessman must find a way to repair a deeply divided and fractured party to provide momentum for what is sure to be a hard-fought general election campaign.
