Vice President Joe Biden Officiates Gay Marriage in His Backyard

Vice President Joe Biden took part in a historic moment at his official residence, Number One Observatory Circle, on Monday.

He officiated the “wedding” of two men.

White House staffers Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie, who are homosexual, approached the vice president about officiating. He not only accepted—he invited them to the official residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Biden’s official Twitter account includes a photo of the vice president smiling as Mosteller slides a ring on Mahshie’s finger. Biden included the following comment: “Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.”

In order to officiate, Biden received a temporary certification from the District of Columbia. It’s unclear how the Catholic Church will respond. The vice president has always declared himself a “devout Catholic,” even when his policies have seemingly flown in the face of the church’s teachings.

Although excommunication is highly unlikely, at least two bishops have posited that any politician who supports certain policies—including abortion and same-sex “marriage”—should not receive communion. There is mounting pressure on the Vatican to soften its stance on those issues, just as many mainline Protestant denominations have.
