Paul Ryan: ‘Comprehensive’ Tax Plan on Its Way

Whether it’s simplifying the U.S. Tax Code, flattening the tax rates or scrapping the code altogether, Republicans have been unified on at least one issue regarding taxes: They need to change soon.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) announced late last week that a “very comprehensive” tax plan would be unveiled by House Republicans soon during a speech in his home state. The 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate currently faces a primary challenge in his home district brought on as a result of the 2015 budget deal.

“We are going to roll out very comprehensive tax reform to get these rates down across the board—for all businesses, not just the big corporations like some people have argued,” he told the Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce organization. “That is going to be one of the front-and-center pieces of our agenda we are going to roll out.”

Racine is located in Ryan’s congressional district.

The speaker also repeated what has become one of his campaign slogans, that Republicans can no longer just be an “opposition party,” it must become a “proposition party.” If you don’t like the direction things are going, “you have to offer an alternative,” he said, noting that’s what House Republicans are preparing to propose.
