Dump Trump Faction Scores a Victory

Dump Trump is officially dead at the Republican National Convention, but not before scoring one final victory and aligning itself with a broader effort to regain grassroots control of the GOP.

Kendal Unruh, a Colorado delegate who has partnered with several members of the #NeverTrump faction in an effort to unbind the Republican delegates in Cleveland to “vote their conscience”—and ostensibly, for someone other than Donald Trump—announced Monday afternoon those efforts are now concluded. Instead, she has partnered with a broader conservative group that is concerned with rules changes adopted last week that would allow the RNC to “change the rules” anytime it wants in between conventions.

The group gained the support of a prominent member of the Committee on Rules, Morton Blackwell, founder and president of the Leadership Institute. He opposed unbinding the delegates, but is concerned about the rules changes.

With his support, the effort to force a roll-call vote gained the support of delegate majorities of the requisite seven states and territories. They got nine: Colorado, Washington state, Utah, Minnesota, Wyoming, Maine, Iowa, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

However, the secretary of the convention, Susie Hudson, couldn’t be found to present the written petition for a roll-call vote on the rules package.
