Jon Voight on Donald Trump: ‘May God Give Him Strength’

Legendary Hollywood actor Jon Voight hasn’t been a member of Twitter for very long, joining the social media platform in late July.

In the slightly more than two months that he has been using the platform, he’s only tweeted 11 times. Once to say “hello” to the Twitterverse, once to acknowledge it was his official account, twice to share a music video by his goddaughter, and then seven times in a “tweetstorm” to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump following the release of a video by fellow screen legend Robert De Niro, as well as the release of the 2005 “hot mic” audio.

“I am so ashamed of my fellow actor Bobby De Niro’s rant against Donald Trump. What foul words he used against a presidential nominee who has worked harder then any other man I know in the past year and a half to get a good message to the American people,” he wrote. “I don’t know of too many men who haven’t expressed some sort of similar sexual terms toward women, especially in their younger years.

“Donald Trump’s words were not as damaging as Robert De Niro’s ugly rant. Trump’s words did not hurt anyone. Can you imagine if any Republican said words like Robert De Niro used—against Hilary Clinton or Barack Obama? All hell would break loose.

“I am calling for all Trump supporters to express their outrage and anger against De Niro and all of the Republican turncoats against Trump. Let Donald Trump know we are completely behind him, and may God give him the strength to continue his calling.”

Voight was responding to comments from De Niro in a video. The “Raging Bull” star had said:

“[Trump]’s an embarrassment to this country. It makes me so angry that this country has gotten to this point that this fool, this bozo, has wound up where he has. He talks how he’d like to punch people in the face? Well, I’d like to punch him in the face. This is somebody that we want for president? I don’t think so.”

During an engagement overseas to promote a recent film, De Niro doubled down on his comments about Trump, including his desire to punch the GOP nominee in the face. He also responded to Voight’s Twitter comments:

“I like Jon—he’s a nice guy—but he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
