US Embassy in Tel Aviv Makes History by Putting This Under the American Flag

“For the first time in history,” said a Facebook post from U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro, “the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv has raised the Pride flag together with our American flag.”

A photo attached to the social media announcement shows the LGBT flag flying directly beneath the American flag, a bold statement in a primarily Jewish and Muslim part of the world.

“We are proud to join with the municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo and its residents in celebrating LGBT Pride Week,” said the post.

The show of gay pride from the embassy comes as the Israeli city expects upwards of 130,000 attendees of a gay pride rally scheduled for later this month, according to the Jerusalem Post.

In May, President Barack Obama declared the month of June to be national gay pride month.
