Holy Spirit’s Power Blesses Pentecostal Church, Refugees Amid Horrors at Ukraine Border
As the crisis in Ukraine persists, so do the stories of hardship, suffering, disaster and death. But Christ-followers in the area have far different stories to tell: those of caring, community, sacrifice and service, all driven by the Holy Spirit’s power.
A leadership team from CityServe is serving in Poland now and seeing God at work in the many churches now serving refugees near the border with Ukraine.
They saw a 12-year-old boy, his arms filled with toys, bringing them to share with refugee children.
They saw a man playing the piano he had brought from Italy to bring a bit of joy amid tragedy.
And they saw a small Pentecostal church that God blessed in a supernatural way.
“This was a small church, maybe 100-150 members, renting a facility, a small place,” Pastor Pelle Pastor Pelle Hörnmark, chairman of the Pentecostal European Fellowship, says on a recent live video and Strang Report podcast. “The casino in the city moved out from a whole floor in an office building, and they said to the small church, ‘If you want to, take the whole casino.”
The church is now using the entire space as a center for refugees, and others are joining in the ministry there. These people are ministering out of their lack, not because they expect to receive, Hörnmark says. “When we give them something, we will empower the church to make them strong,” he says.
“It reminds me of when I flew over Ireland, and I saw these stone walls separating neighbor from neighbor,” says CityServe Chairman and CEO Dave Donaldson. “And then about six to eight months later, I flew over the same area, and I couldn’t see the walls. And I asked the person next to me, ‘Where are the walls?’ And he said, ‘Well, you can’t see them because the harvest is high.’
“And that’s what we’re seeing here,” Donaldson says. “People are focused on the harvest. Yes, they’re focused on the need, not the walls that separate us, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is unity. And when there is unity, the Spirit of the Lord shows up.”
