Regent University has announced that school founder and chancellor Pat Robertson will take over as the school’s interim CEO until a successor can be found for the recently resigned Carlos Campo.

Campo, who had succeeded Robertson in 2010, resigned Sept. 6, only three weeks into his fourth year as CEO of the Virginia Beach, Va., private Christian University. Campo didn’t give reasons for his departure, but school spokeswoman Mindy Hughes told the Associated Press that it was his decision to leave.

“It’s not the result of any moral or fiscal issues on my part or the university’s,” Campo told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

Hughes said in a statement that the school’s board of trustees will consider the matter of replacing Campo soon.

A university spokesperson told the Virginian-Pilot that, according to the school’s bylaws, the chancellor will serve as CEO if a vacancy occurs. Robertson, who founded the school in 1978, served as CEO until Campo took over.

Campo was the first Latino president of a regionally accredited Christian university in the United States. It has been reported that Latino enrollments had been on the rise since Campo took over as CEO.
