New Target Emerges as Biden Tightens Grip on COVID Issue

Share:

President Biden has announced new executive orders mandating COVID shots for many private employees as well as all federal employees and contractors, with no exceptions. In a sweeping move of executive power, Biden announced his broad vaccine mandate impacting as many as 100 million Americans.

The executive orders are targeting the private sector in a surprise move. All employers with more than 100 workers are being ordered to require employees to be vaccinated or test for the virus every week. The White House website states:

“The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is developing a rule that will require all employers with 100 or more employees to ensure their workforce is fully vaccinated or require any workers who remain unvaccinated to produce a negative test result on at least a weekly basis before coming to work. OSHA will issue an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) to implement this requirement. This requirement will impact over 80 million workers in private sector businesses with 100-plus employees.”

In one comment which appeared to contend that vaccinated people aren’t protected, Biden said, “We are going to protect the vaccinated workers from unvaccinated coworkers.”

Some political experts are doubtful that Biden can militarize the federal government against medium-sized private businesses in this way:

And Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., issued the following statement about Biden’s federal vaccine mandate.

“My family and I chose to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, and I am grateful for it. Every Oklahoman and American should have that same choice and option. Federal employees and contractors, members of our military, health care workers, and everyone else in our nation should be able to choose whether to get vaccinated. Period. The Biden proposal ignores the natural immunity millions of Americans have because they have recovered from COVID and the millions of other Americans that do not want to be forced to take a vaccine for a multitude of personal, religious, and medical reasons.”

The U.S. continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic, with the average number of new daily cases recently hovering around 150,000 and 1,500 deaths per day. The case numbers are four times higher than they were at this time last year. And right now the U.S. is recording twice the number of hospitalizations compared with last September.

It comes as America has hit a new milestone—75% of adults have now gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, over the Labor Day weekend, college football kicked off with hundreds of thousands of screaming fans packed shoulder to shoulder into stadiums. Only five college teams and three professional ones reportedly require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test before entering.

Despite the CDC warning against unvaccinated people traveling over the holiday weekend, the TSA screened 3.5 million air travelers, a number not seen since before the pandemic. Highways, beaches and national parks were all packed.

“I’m hoping we won’t see a major spike, but after every single holiday we have seen a jump in infections and hospitalizations and deaths,” said Ashish Jha, M.D., dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. {eoa}
