‘Frozen’ Star Green Lights Giving Elsa a Girlfriend
The #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign just gained one prominent supporter: the voice of Frozen’s Elsa herself, Idina Menzel.
“I think it’s great,” Menzel told ET. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”
Fans began the campaign to make Elsa a lesbian at the beginning of the month, though rumors flew since the movie’s premiere years ago. With the sequel on the horizon, the LGBT community is pushing for Elsa to embrace the lesbian level.
“Growing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess—and neither have girls growing up right now,” campaign founder Alexis Isabel Moncada wrote for MTV. “The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”
Progressive company Disney has yet to officially respond to the campaign, but some prominent members of the Christian community sounded off.
“The LGBT community has started a petition to give Elsa from Frozen a ‘girlfriend’. This is just another way of them trying to indoctrinate our children’s minds. I urge you parents to also take a stand for what you believe. You can petiion (sic), raise your voice, become informed and even #GiveElsaABoyfriend. Your voice matters, make it count!!!!” ex-lesbian Janey Boynes posted to Facebook.
