Christian Journalist Pierces the Darkness of Capitol Hill Through God’s Love
An otherwise normal day will suddenly become special when the bubbly Janae Bowens shows up, bringing with her the joy, encouragement and love of the Lord Jesus Christ as a member of “God’s media.”
As one of the most secular cities in the world, Washington, D.C., oozes of the arrogant power accumulation of the elite who look at faith as the coin of the uneducated “deplorables”—in particular the media, which, on the surface, appears to be deeply and passionately anti-Christian.
And while the secular media works to tear down Christians and God’s kingdom, Bowens brightens the airwaves as the senior White House producer and correspondent for the Black News Channel, bringing the “truth” to the world.
Bowens is only one of a mighty and growing band of professionals, trained in their craft, poised and working hard to be the best at what they do while “oozing” the love, joy and freedom of faith in a living Christ.
“I love the media. It allows me to tell stories, in particular those that aren’t told,” Bowens says. “I started my career as a student journalist at Elon University and graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. I then worked as a producer, reporter and fill-in anchor for four years in North and South Carolina.”
Pausing for prayer with the Capitol Hill chaplain in the busy Capitol cafeteria, Bowens thanks God for the opportunities she has, asks for His special blessing on both her work and personal life and says a special prayer for those around her in the busy center of the Capitol.
“I want to be the best at what I do, whether in front of the camera or behind it, so that I can be a reflection of my Savior,” Bowens says. “I also want to be a vehicle to share His love to so many in this city who need Christ.”
Reflecting the nonstop world of media these days, Bowens’ phone rings constantly as she directs a program in production, taking a moment to come back to prayer to honor Jesus.
Bowens has bigger dreams, however, and prays to one day begin her own program and perhaps her own network.
“My prayer is that God will use me on network TV,” Bowens says. “I want to be a true professional and to show the world that those of us for whom Jesus Christ is the center of our lives are the best at what we do because of that very power. I want to be a witness for Christ to those millions we can potentially touch for His kingdom.”
When finished with prayer, Bowens shuffles off to her next interview, asking for prayer for herself so that she can make a difference for God—as opposed to tearing Him down—as a member of the media.
“Please pray for me, that God will use me, that He will place me where I can best serve Him,” she says.
In a day and age of “me first,” it is refreshing to see the joy of the Lord in a journalist like Bowens and to watch as her smile lights up the district like no other. {eoa}
