Chick-fil-A Controversy Stirs Social Media Support
On the day of Mike Huckabee’s Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, set for Aug. 1, Charisma News readers are voicing their opinions on president and Chief Operating Officer Dan Cathy’s support for traditional marriage through message boards and social media.
Cathy has drawn sharp criticism from citizens and politicians for his recent statements of being “guilty as charged” of funding groups that support traditional marriage. His comments have sparked a national firestorm among the traditional media and social media websites.
The Chick-fil-A saga has become one of the hottest conversational topics around the country in the past few days.
On Charisma News’ Facebook page, Chuck Burress wrote: God blesses the obedient, which Mr. Cathy is.”
Eric Posthuma added, “It’s good to see that there are still men and women out there who are prepared to speak the truth of God’s Word.”
Charisma News’ story comments also have been busy since the story broke.
Sandra McDonald Connell wrote: “God bless Chick-fil-A! I wish more people would stands for what’s right.”
Karen Clemovich said, “Standing with Chick-fil-A on their Christian family values and the Word of God.”
As of 10:30 a.m. EST Wednesday, more than 598,000 people have said they plan to support Huckabee’s Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have said they hope to keep Chick-fil-A franchises out of their cities due to Cathy’s comments.
Those comments have drawn fire from an unusual source, the American Civil Liberties Union, which strongly supports same-sex marriage.
“The government can regulate discrimination in employment or against customers, but what the government cannot do is punish someone for their words,” Adam Schwartz, senior attorney for the ACLU of Illinois told Fox News. “We support the first amendment. We don’t think the government should exclude Chick-fil-A because of the anti-LGBT message. We believe this is clear cut.”
While many non-supporters of traditional marriage will stay away from Chick-fil-A Wednesday, the restaurant certainly will not be hurting for business.
Laura DH commented on a Charisma News story: “I am having Chick-Fil-A for lunch and buying for my office.”
