A Maryland sheriff confirmed multiple fatalities after a gunman opened fire in the Annapolis Capital-Gazette offices.
Five people died, according to the latest reports, with several others “gravely injured.”
Anne Arundel County Sheriff Ron Bateman tells Shepard Smith that a suspect has been apprehended at the newspaper’s office, located on Bestgate Road, off Defense Highway in Parole, Maryland, a Fox affiliate reported.
“We’re doing the best we can. We’re doing everything we can to get people out safe and we’re trying to minimize the casualties,” Lt. Ryan Frashure, a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, tells CNN affiliate WJLA.
“And again, there are a lot of factors that got into this. so there are a lot of secondary things we have to look into also,” Frashure says. “Whether there’s any type—whether there are other shooters, there might be more than one, bombs, anything like that, so there’s a variety of things we have to go through.”
U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted:

What happened in Annapolis is the worst nightmare of every journalist. None of our newsrooms are equipped to fend off an attack. We belong to the communities we serve. We can’t be fortresses. Praying that as many people as possible make it out alive.
