Tyler Perry Costume Designer: Sometimes Leadership Means Saying the Harsh Truths

Share:

Tyler Perry Studios costume designer Crystal Renee knows the pressure of having to lead a team.

Starting out as a production assistant, Renee worked her way up in the industry to become an actress and, eventually, a TV and film costume designer. Her fearless faith, says Dr. Joseph Walker III, is what makes her a fearless leader.

And sometimes that means telling the harsh truths to someone on your team.

“When I can actually mentor young people and instill good values in them—my whole team, they respect me and know I only want what’s best for them,” Renee says on the Next Level Leadership Podcast. “I get on them, I give them the harsh truth. I always tell them, ‘Whatever I teach you in here, I want you to be able to take it outside these walls and apply it to your real life.'”

Even beyond dressing actors and actresses in incredible costumes, Renee says this kind of mentorship is her favorite part of the job.
