Florida Newspaper Accuses DeSantis of Christian Nationalism, White Supremacy
One of the most influential newspapers in Florida, “The Miami Herald,” recently published an editorial accusing Gov. Ron DeSantis of “flirting with Christian nationalism,” and said that his and other national leaders’ ideals were overlapping with white supremacy.
The newspaper pointed to DeSantis’ “invoking of Christian war imagery” when he quoted Ephesians 6:11 in a speech in Michigan at Hillsdale College. Ephesians 6:11 reads, “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
“It ain’t going to be easy,” DeSantis said. “You got to be strong. You got to put on the full armor of God. You got to take a stand—take a stand against the left’s schemes. You got to stand your ground. Stand firm with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. You will face fire with flaming arrows, but the shield of faith will protect you.”
“The Miami Herald” looped DeSantis in with other conservative leaders like U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, both of whom have boldly espoused their Christian faith in public speeches.
“The Herald” wrote: “Republicans such as DeSantis have found a ‘political gold mine’ by pitting Christians against the ‘so-called evils of the left,’ gay and transgender people and teachers accused of pushing a ‘woke’ agenda, including the critical race theory.
“We cannot overlook the overlap between Christian nationalism—and its nostalgia for our ‘Anglo-Protestant past—and white supremacy. “Many devout Christians enslaved Black people in centuries past.”
The newspaper encouraged Democrats to “come up with a counter-narrative to politicians like DeSantis that does not demonize religion or come across as proselytizing.”
But whereas the left continues to push a socialist agenda for the future of the United States—which “The Miami Herald” says is “a secular nation with no official religion,” DeSantis says he will continue to fight against that very ideal, and he has.
“I reject socialism outright,” DeSantis said in June. “I reject Marxism, Leninism, communism, any of these ‘isms’ that have come out of a political theory that basically denies the work of each and every individual. It denies people’s aspirations to reach for the stars, denies the fact that we have inherent God-given rights.”
Earlier this year, DeSantis signed the Parents’ Rights in Education Bill, which prohibits schools from officially instructing students about sexual orientation and gender identity through K-3rd grade, ages 5-9.
The law also protects parental rights and requires parents to be notified of any changes affecting their child’s mental, physical or emotional well-being or health. In addition, it forbids school districts from withholding information from parents.
The left demonized it as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
DeSantis also targeted the Walt Disney Company for its engagement in politics, signing a bill that would eliminate a special tax district that has allowed Disney to govern the land where its theme parks sit. {eoa}
