At UN, ACLJ Denounces ‘Senseless Violence’ Against Unborn Babies

Recently, the U.N. Human Rights Council convened on the topic of violence against children. During the interactive dialogue with the special representative of the secretary-general on violence against children, I presented an oral intervention regarding abortion, delineating the horrific practice and calling on the UNHRC to protect all life.

It is the U.N.’s official position that:

The protection of children from all forms of violence is a fundamental right enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The inclusion of a specific target (SDG 16.2) in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to end all forms of violence against children gives renewed impetus towards the realization of the right of every child to live free from fear, neglect, abuse and exploitation.

With this fundamental right in mind, I reminded the council that:

Egregious and senseless violence against children is carried out on a daily basis all around the world—it is called abortion. Whether the abortion is carried out illegally or legally, with or without specialized medical personnel, it consists of the killing of an unborn baby, a unique and distinct human being.

I further pointed out, “There can be no doubt that dismemberment of an innocent baby is an act of torture that should be prohibited.”

This oral intervention summarizes our previous written submission which goes into detail about barbaric abortion practices and the growing international consensus in opposition. As we pointed out then:

Several scientific studies indicate that the [unborn baby] may feel pain. At a minimum, it has been established that as early as 8 weeks, the [baby] responds to touch. Several U.S. states have taken legal steps to take into account this sensitivity to pain of unborn children. As stated in the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, as early as 20 weeks of development, the [baby] is able to feel pain through a functional nervous system.

It is obvious that the dismemberment of a human being clearly is an act of characterized torture. Per se, such practices on unborn children should be prohibited.

We have redoubled our efforts to fight for our pro-life agenda, including at the U.N. where we are urging the world’s leaders to put a stop to these horrific abortions. Unfortunately, as we’ve told you, President Biden has already taken the first steps toward rescinding the Mexico City Policy, once again making Americans pay for abortions internationally. The ACLJ will continue to enlist the support of our members to oppose the reversal of the Mexico City Policy.

The world’s children need our voice. It is our sincere hope that the council takes its agenda to end all forms of violence against children seriously, and indeed calls for ending the violent killing of the most innocent among us.
