Six months after announcing that Pat Robertson would be retiring as president of Regent University, the school’s Board of Trustees has named his successor.

Carlos Campo, Ph.D., (pictured) was unanimously elected on Saturday to become the eighth president of the Virginia Beach, Va.-based university, effective Aug. 1, 2010.

Campo, who currently serves as Regent’s vice president of academic affairs, holds a doctoral degree in literature. He was a literature professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the College of Southern Nevada before moving into administrative positions.

In 2007, he was recognized in southern Nevada as Outstanding Educator and Educator of the Year, and was named Champion of Education by the National Latin Business Association. He is also a founding board member of the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network.

“Dr. Campo is an outstanding leader with proven, award-winning experience in higher education,” said Robertson, who founded Regent and was named executive chairman of its board. “His expertise in both traditional and online education, his passion for student success and his enthusiastic commitment to the integration of faith and learning will help Regent University expand its global reach.”

Founded in 1978, Regent University has more than 4,700 students from 46 nations.
