Mother Who Was Told to Abort Her Child: ‘The Spirit of God Rose Up in Me and Crushed the Flesh’
When doctors told Kimberly Cleveland she should consider aborting her child, she admits that her flesh began to toy with the idea.
Cleveland and her husband, Fred, had already lost two babies in horrific deaths within an hour of their births. Doctors had just diagnosed her third baby with a heart defect, and Cleveland wasn’t sure she could emotionally handle if another baby died shortly after birth.
“The word termination comes up not once, but twice,” Cleveland says. “I’m to the point where I wrestle with the idea because they start telling you all of the cons, like this child will be born with a defect and she’s not going to have the quality of life you expect for her to have. She may not make it through surgery. … and they say, ‘Do you want to terminate this pregnancy and start again?’ And your flesh immediately says yes.”
But that’s not what God wants, Cleveland says. Fred leads worship at Koinonia Congregation in the Washington, D.C., area, and the couple knew that God still works miracles today.
“The Spirit of God rose up in me, and it crushed the flesh,” Cleveland says. “[I told doctors that] we’re going to see the goodness of the Lord in this.”
That’s when God really began to move. Listen to the podcast to hear how.
