Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump makes a visit to a Trump campaign call center

Is Donald Trump Scripturally Qualified to Serve as President?

“Moreover, look for ABLE men from all the people, men who fear god, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens” (Ex. 18:21, ESV, emphasis added).

God does not always choose leaders based on their personal morality or religious popularity. In this passage there are four traits God looked for in national leaders and traits which, I believe, Trump also displays.

‘Able’

This word means “strength,” “might,” “wealth,” “force,” etc. It connotes a man of strength who is able to wield power with confidence. Though some would call it arrogance, Trump’s forceful persona comes from his confidence in the vision he has for this nation. Because he is not easily intimidated, it positions him to effectively confront the current political control structures in our government. His problem-solving skills and tested ability to build and repair broken cities and systems indicate his qualifications for rebuilding a failing economy and broken infrastructure.

‘Fear God’

To fear God is to revere Him as the ultimate authority and Creator of the universe. It is the inner reality of a Higher Power that must be answered to over and above answering to men (Is. 51:7; Prov. 28:14). I have never heard Trump mock God or degrade religious beliefs. Being ignorant of various biblical doctrines is not the same as opposing them. Bringing godly advisers around him and speaking of his increased commitment to religious freedom is mounting evidence of this fear of the Lord growing in Trump’s life.

‘Trustworthy’

This is probably the one quality in Trump that most critics will contest. The splinter in his eye is just too big for them. Yet the factual record and countless testimonies from friends, family and co-workers through the years all indicate that Trump deals honestly with people and is a reliable boss. Given that kids are usually the first to pick up on a parent’s trustworthiness (or lack thereof), it is telling that Trump’s own children not only speak highly of their father, but exemplify the qualities of upright and responsible citizens themselves. Regardless of his marital failings, Trump’s heart as a good and trustworthy father is most evident in his own household.

‘Hate a Bribe’

This is the litmus test of the first two qualities. If someone truly “fears God” and is “trustworthy,” they will not take a bribe or let someone buy them off for personal gain (Prov. 29:4). The fact that Trump insisted on funding his own campaign in the beginning is a result of this personal conviction. It is also this conviction that fuels his zeal and passion for defeating the controlling powers in D.C. By not letting anyone buy his favor, he is in a position to have authority, even in the spiritual realm, to defeat this spirit of greed and control permeating our government. Few are in this position of financial independence which frees him to follow his conscience and not someone else’s pocketbook.

Though there may be instances where these qualities are not fully evident, I believe the overall record and fruit of Trump’s life work indicates a man who is not only qualified but quite able, with God’s help and our prayers, to address the political corruption in this nation and open the doors to greater religious freedom and liberties for generations to come. {eoa}
