Liberty University Receives Lofty Ranking

Liberty University was recently ranked among the top five homeschool-friendly colleges in the nation by TheBestSchools.org.

The site ranked 25 schools, identifying three key features that meet the needs of a homeschool graduate: Christian education, socio-political conservatism, and science and faith integration.

Liberty was the largest school on the list. In its review, the site recognized Liberty’s “forward-looking online and distance education” and its commitment to Christian principles.

“For decades, conservatives, Southern Baptists and Christian educators have called upon Liberty University for direction,” the review reads. “Though fundamentalist in many respects, Liberty is culturally conscious, having an impressive philosophy and apologetics programs aimed at engaging the big ideas directing society.”

It cites Liberty’s size (now exceeding 92,500 students, with 12,500 resident students and 80,000 online) and range of faculty, which “enables some diversity of views along with other hard-to-find options like degrees in law, cinema, and aeronautics.”

With the success of its distance learning program, TheBestSchools.org calls Liberty “one of the most flexible and accessible options for homeschoolers.”

Sarah Wittcop, a Virginia homeschool graduate who earned her Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies from Liberty in 2008 and her Master of Business Administration from Liberty in 2011, said Liberty helped her meet her education and career goals.

“Liberty really made it easy for me to transition from being a homeschool student to a residential college student,” she said. “I never felt overwhelmed. I transitioned into the classroom environment easily. Everyone was extremely helpful, from the admissions counselors, to my professors, all the way to my dorm leadership.”

Liberty was ranked fifth on the annual list, ahead of three other Virginia schools—Regent University, Patrick Henry College and Christendom College—and ahead of some well-known Christian colleges, such as Oklahoma Baptist University, Moody Bible Institute and Cedarville University.
