Tony Perkins Explains Why LifeWay Survey Gets It Right on Ted Cruz
Following a recent LifeWay Research survey that found U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) had more support among American pastors than any other presidential candidate, Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and a Cruz supporter, offered a response.
“As I have come to trust Ted Cruz for his consistent constitutional conservatism, so are America’s pastors. I believe he has the highest level of support among America’s pastors because his political rhetoric matches his public record.
“Pastors know better than anyone the threats—primarily court driven—to religious liberty and they understand how the freedom to believe serves as the foundation for all our other freedoms. The threat is not hypothetical; it is a clear and present danger.
“I see Ted’s support rising among pastors in part because Ted understands the Constitution and the Supreme Court better than any candidate in this race. He has argued nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and has authored 70 Supreme Court briefs. Unlike past Republican presidents who have gotten wrong their nominations to the High Court, Sen. Cruz can not only spot liberal jurists; he is a fighter who will ensure constitutionalists who respect the rule of law are seated on the Court. With the next president expected to appoint two or three justices, the stakes for the future of freedom in America could not be higher.
“Additionally, Ted Cruz understands, as America’s pastors do, that what is at the heart of our nation’s ailment is not political, but spiritual.
“Ted Cruz is exactly the leader America needs to lead this nation to greatness again. I am enthusiastically supporting Ted Cruz to be our next president.”
