Poll: Faction of Americans Question Obama’s Support of Israel

The number of likely American voters who believe U.S. President Barack Obama is not supportive enough of Israel is on the rise, according to a poll conducted for The Hill newspaper.

The poll found that a full 39 percent of respondents said Obama is not supportive enough of Israel. Only 13 percent said he is too supportive of Israel.

In a similar poll conducted in May 2011, some 31 percent of respondents said Obama was not supportive enough of Israel. At that time, 27 percent said Obama was too supportive of Israel.

The current poll found that 30 percent of likely voters think Obama is generally anti-Israel while 28 percent think he is generally pro-Israel.

The poll numbers are based on a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely voters that was conducted on Feb. 28 by Pulse Opinion Research.

Meanwhile, White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed on Monday reports that Obama might cancel his upcoming trip to Israel later this month if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fails to form a new coalition by that time.

“We have no scheduling changes to announce,” Carney said. “The president is looking forward to, very much, his trip to Israel and the region, and we’re on course planning that trip.”

Carney also talked about the Iranian nuclear issue, saying “the window of opportunity for Iran will not remain open indefinitely. There is opportunity here for Tehran to give up its nuclear weapons ambitions, to comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions, to get right with the international community and thereby rejoin the international community and end its isolation from the world because of its behavior.”

“We take no option off the table, including the military option,” Carney said.
