Restaurant Offers Discount for Public Prayer Over Meal

You wouldn’t think saying grace out loud at a restaurant would make people angry. Then again, in this day and age maybe you would.

Nevertheless, at least one Christian business owner is so committed to public prayer that it is giving a discount to diners who pray over their meals.

That restaurant is Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. According to HLN, customer Jordan Smith is one of many to dine there who have found a 15 percent discount on their bill for “praying in public.”

Smith told HLN that her party “prayed over our meal, and the waitress came over at the end of the meal and said, ‘Just so you know, we gave you a 15 percent discount for praying,’ which I’d never seen before.”

Smith was “definitely surprised” by the discount and that “the three of us at the table talked about how wonderful that is and what a cool thing it is that they do as business owners.”

Smith also took a photo of the receipt and put it on her Facebook page. When it went viral, the responses were mixed. Most celebrated the gesture on the diner’s Facebook page, but some, like Dave Olson, wrote:

“Sorry, but this is not a discount. This is not a ‘random gift.’ This is a tax that you impose on people who don’t pray to your God.”

And Steven Fernandes wrote: “What if someone prays to Satan or one of the Greek gods? will you give them 15 percent off also…If not then this sounds a bit like discrimination.”
