After 40,135 Abortions, Gosnell Brought to Justice

Making perhaps the biggest headlines in abortion news since Roe v. Wade in 1973, abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell was found guilty today of three counts of first degree murder. The long-awaited verdict took social media by storm and perhaps will change America’s perception of abortion clinics and their accountability.

A jury of seven women and five men found Gosnell guilty after nine days of deliberations ended today. Gosnell was originally charged with four counts of first-degree murder for allegedly killing four babies born alive in his West Philadelphia abortion clinic. He also faced charges for one count of third-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, who died in 2009 at the Women’s Medical Society abortion clinic after Gosnell’s untrained and unlicensed staff administered a lethal dose of Demerol, an opioid pain reliever, then failed to provide emergency care when she stopped breathing during her abortion.

Gosnell, 72, could receive the death penalty or life in prison for the charges. It was widely reported that Gosnell performed 40,136 abortions in his clinic from 1988 to 2009.

“This guilty verdict is victory for unborn babies around the world—and their mothers,” said Tim Wildmon, president of American Family Association. “No longer will we look at abortion as just another ‘simple procedure’ for the sake of convenience. In this case, abortion killed a 41-year-old woman with a full life ahead of her. But abortion kills so much more—human spirit, a child’s chance to grow up and flourish, and love that can blossom in family relationships. We hope and pray that this decision will send a loud and clear message that abortion is wrong and it’s murder.”
