Hours after the assassination of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran‘s supreme leader, has ordered Iranian forces to launch a “direct attack” against Israel, multiple sources report.
The New York Times reports that Khamenei delivered the directive at an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council shortly after the announcement of Haniyeh’s killing.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed on Wednesday that a “projectile” hit the residence that housed Haniyeh, killing the Hamas leader. No other casualties were mentioned in the report.
Although Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the assassination, Tehran places blame solidly with the Israel Defense Forces. Posted on Khamenei’s English-language X account was the following:
The criminal, terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our territory and has caused our grief, but it has also prepared the ground for a severe punishment.
