New Show Uses ‘The Office’ Comedy to Tell the Story of Moses
A new show called “The Promised Land” is taking modern-day comedy and combining it with the biblical story of Moses.
“The Promised Land” features the story of Moses and the Israelites as they embark on their journey in the wilderness out of Egypt and into God’s promised land. However, instead of simply telling this story in the traditional way, “The Promised Land” is putting a spin on how this story is told, making it comparable to the “mockumentary” style of “The Office.”

“What do you think about when you think about Moses?” writer and director Mitch Hudson asked in a promo video. “I think for a lot of people, Moses is a stained-glass window character, someone who’s larger than life, someone that none of us could ever relate to. But the truth is, Moses was a man. Moses was a person that God chose. Someone who was unqualified, underprepared and obviously on paper, not the right pick to lead God’s chosen people. But in the end, God did choose him and God used him.”
In an interview with Religion News Service, Hudson, who works on “The Chosen,” detailed that while he works on “The Promised Land” he does so with the Bible and biblical commentaries to help guide and direct him with where to go, and to understand when to be serious and when to make jokes.
Hudson also told Religion News Service that he wants to reach the next generation with this show.
“I view the target audience as predominantly millennials and Gen Z, especially people who have a degree of connection to faith,” Hudson said.
“The Promised Land” seeks to entertain a new generation in a similar way that younger audiences have connected with “The Chosen.” This new direction for faith-based entertainment is something that many people have desired to see as secular entertainment continues to move further toward the darkness. Let’s continue to lift up those in the entertainment industry who are seeking to be God’s light in the entertainment industry.
