How Is God Moving in this Election Season’s Chaos?
When President Joe Biden responded to the growing chorus of requests to drop out of the presidential race, he said he would not unless he heard from the “Lord almighty.” It was an unprecedented reference from a leading Democratic politician. Biden’s quip made it sound—as far-fetched as it seems—as if he takes his direction from the Lord.
The media and many Democrats are saying Biden should drop out after his disastrous debate with Donald Trump on June 27. But his remark hinting he listens to the Lord for direction gave me reason to raise the question: “Where is God in all this election chaos?”
The news media and the wider culture rarely examine events in light of what the Bible says or what God is saying. But as Christians, we should seek to understand the news from the Bible’s perspective. I believe we live in an upside-down world, where right is called wrong and wrong is called right. Biblical stances especially on gay rights and abortion, among many others, are ridiculed mercilessly, while speaking about them is labeled “hate speech” more and more every month.

There are plenty of reasons not to back Biden. His platform is filled with extreme leftist policies while unsurprisingly the Left and the media love him and defend him. They pick apart everything Donald Trump says or does, but every Democrat from Biden down gets a free pass regardless how egregious the issue.
I have written about Trump and posed the question raised by many Christian leaders, whether God raise up an imperfect leader like He did throughout the Bible to lead their nation at a crucial time. I believe He did and I make that argument in my book, God and Donald Trump. Some prophets even prophesied that Trump would win two terms, against all odds.
Then Trump lost his second bid for office in 2020. Since then, the Democrats have tried to litigate Trump completely out of politics, revealing they believe they cannot defeat him at the ballot box. There have been seven frivolous lawsuits that would never be brought against anyone else. Prosecuting or jailing political opponents is what happens in third-world countries. Now, Biden and the Left are screaming that when Trump is re-elected (as is looking more likely by the week), he will go after his political foes—ironically projecting onto Trump what they already have been doing for many months now.
So, I wonder again, what is God doing among all of this?
One key, timeless indicator is how the secular community, especially the press, can never understand how faith can influence politics. Nearly 30 years ago, during the Clinton administration, the Orlando Sentinel asked me to write an op-ed on how I could justify using my religious beliefs to determine who I voted for—as if that were somehow wrong. I said my faith determines everything important in my life, such as who I married, what work I do and who my friends are. Why wouldn’t my Christian worldview determine who I vote for?
Yet here we are, barely four months from the election, and Biden shows no intention to step down. It’s as if no one believes him. So, he chooses to invoke God’s name, assuming that if he claims God spoke to him, only then, and not before, will he borrow from President Johnson’s playbook in 1968 and “heroically” not accept his party’s nomination for re-election, opening the door for the Democratic party to replace Biden with a candidate they think can beat Trump.
In a recent podcast I opined about the political scene and contrasted it with the fact there were no new wars during Trump’s administration; that he advanced the cause of religious liberty, moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem as promised, and appointed three conservative justices to the Supreme Court as part of his promise to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
Those prophetic voices I mention in God and Donald Trump said this billionaire New York businessman would be elected in 2016 and he was. But the prophecy was that he would be re-elected for a second term. Let’s pray that the perfection of their prophecy comes to pass this November.
