Does God Really Give You the Desires of Your Heart?
Psalm 37:4 reads, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
We all have desires, whether it is a spouse, a sports car, a house on the beach or a multi-million-dollar salary. God’s heart is for you to enjoy life and to have it abundantly.
But, evangelist Kyle Winkler says, like most of God’s promises in His Word, it comes with a conditional statement.
“Here in Psalm 37:4, David instructs that we must delight ourselves in the Lord, and then He will give you the desires of your heart,” Winkler says. “The first clue to discovering God’s intention for your life is delight. It means satisfaction, which itself is fully defined as the fulfillment of one’s wishes, expectations or needs. In other words, Scriptures says to find the fulfillment of your desires in the Lord is find the person of God who is made up characteristics of goodness, love and faithfulness.
“The second clue is heart. To be sure, it doesn’t mean feelings or fixations. In Hebrew, heart is the entirety of a person. Put together, these reveal a depth to His promise, which far surpasses merely receiving everything you want. I’m a Bible promise guy, and I’m all about declaring God’s promises over my life. But we must understand that doing so is not some magical solution to get all our wishes granted. Rather, we declare God’s promises to give our lives and wills in alignment with God.
“When you fully find your satisfaction of who God is, then who you are is transformed more and more into his image and, consequently, the desires of your heart are received because they are met in God Himself. What does this mean for the person who yearns for a spouse, a nicer home or more money? Certainly, make your requests known to God. He absolutely enjoys blessing His people. But once you do, be careful not to live with your contentment hinged to your receiving any blessing. Instead, live with your satisfaction in the one Who is all sufficient, Who truly completes you, Who is your shelter hiding place, Who is the source of your worth. From today forward, stand on the promise that who you are is fulfilled in who He is.
