Cuban Americans Clamor for Biden’s Support as Protests Over Cuba’s Communist Tyranny Hit the US
Protests in Cuba about the totalitarian communist regime, which began last weekend in the island country 90 miles off the coast of Florida, have begun to spill over into the United States and are escalating.
Hundreds of Cuban American protesters blocked a major expressway in Miami demanding President Biden do more to show his support for their plight. In a statement Monday, Biden praised Cuban protesters but has done little else to help the situation, The Associated Press and other media outlets have reported.
“We need Biden’s support,” one man with a Cuban flag draped over his back told Fox News. “We haven’t gotten support from the president. So, we are trying to fight, to finish with the communism.”
Yet another man who joined the protests said, “We are facing tremendous genocide in Cuba. Joe Biden should help us. That’s what we are here for, asking for the White House to pronounce favor of the people of Cuba.”
Cuba has reported that one man has been killed in that country during antigovernment protests.
Biden faces increased pressure from Republican lawmakers for his administration to step up its support of Cuban demonstrators. He also has been inundated with requests for more U.S. involved in Haiti after last week’s assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.{eoa}
